Volvo SCC

New concept incorporates design elements of the 1800ES

By Jeff Perry

The SCC, which stands for Safety Concept Car, debuted at the Detroit Motor Show on January 8th, 2001.

The car, which was designed at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in California, incorporates styling elements from the modern S60 with that of the classic 1800ES.

With an emphasis on "superior vision," the car is designed to enhance safety by improving a driver's field of view. The most noticeable manifestation of this design approach is the see through A-pillar and inward curving B-pillar.

Advanced technology features include a system that automatically takes input from an eye sensor and then adjusts the seat, steering wheel, pedals, console, and gearshift to maximize a driver's view of the road and to position controls within convenient reach.

"Drivers receive more than 90 per cent of the most critical information from outside the vehicle. If we can enhance the quality of this visual information, we can also give drivers a better chance of avoiding collisions," said Hans Gustavsson, Head of Research, Product Development, and Purchasing at Volvo Cars.
