Diego Volvo Grand Opening Open House By Goran Freske Richard Limon, an employee of San Diego Volvo, was on hand to sort out and arrange the vintage Volvos in a shady patch of tarmac, just outside the Parts Department. The morning was sunny and clear with the Santa Ana winds blowing in the mountains and foothills in the east county. Coffee and donuts were waiting for the members of SDVSA to show off their priceless treasures. Bud Hartwell, who had taken upon himself to arrange this promotion for the club, was the first to arrive. Not in his beautiful museum grade ES, which had developed a fuel leak just as it exited the now famous "Hartwell Barn", but in the not quite finished, but still gorgeous, BRG '70 1800E. David Burr and his daughter came in his newly acquired 544, and Gabor Varadi brought his fine example of a 122. The very rare, in this country at least, 210 (the station wagon version of the 444/544, pictured below) was displayed by Richard Pattee, and Richard Menze and Dave Jacobs rounded out the 1800S contingent. The SDVSA Club is very appreciative of all the participants who showed their cars, and of anyone else who attended but was not mentioned here by name. It is too bad that this event fell on the same weekend as the VSA West Coast Convention in Palm Desert (see Gene's article on page 7), but Bud managed remarkably well to assemble about the right number and cross section of collectible Volvos from our club. Sadly, the club did not get the exposure or interest that we had hoped for. During the three hours on Saturday morning that our cars were on display, very few potential customers and guests (and new members) came by. However, we are hoping that this event will lead to a closer relationship in the future between our SDVSA and San Diego Volvo for our mutual benefit. For right now, we owe the management San Diego Volvo, and especially Steve Abrantes, a great deal of gratitude for inviting us and our cars to participate in the Grand Opening of their magnificent brand new remodeled and expanded facility! --Ed.
