Beautiful Oceanside Provides Backdrop for Volvo Outing

Forty's Style Restaurant in Tune with Members

By Russ Orrell

A cold and blustery day dawned Saturday morning when I woke up. I wasn't sure I wanted to take the Green Hornet out if there was a possibility of rain, as I had no weather stripping for my windows. "What the heck", I thought, "Maybe Thor will take pity and hold on to his thunder." Debbie, my beautiful wife, and I bundled into the 1800 and off we went to rendezvous with other members at the Chevron station near the famous windmill landmark off of Palomar Airport Road. When we arrived I was very happy to see Goran Freske, our esteemed editor, and Darwyn and Lois Lumley of Fallbrook with their 1800's.

After some time spent bench racing and oohing and aahing over Goran's new paint job and wheels, we departed Carlsbad and headed up interstate 5 to Oceanside, a mere 10 minutes away. When we arrived at our designated complimentary parking area, Ruby's restaurant had a band playing and the Mayor of Oceanside presented us with keys to the city - just kidding. We did get several appreciative comments from passersby though about our very, very, cool cars.

We then proceeded to take a long walk on a long pier, unlike what I’m usually requested to do, until we arrived at Ruby’s restaurant.  We were joined there by Mike Ruksenas, owner of a soon-to-be restored 1800, and Brad and Sharon Benson.  With good food, good company and an assortment of beverages to choose from, the afternoon flew by.  Thanks to everyone who showed up and for those that didn’t… make sure you get to the next one.  In the meantime, along with Goran from the steps of Ruby’s, I’ll say, “Volvo on Garth, Volvo on Wayne!”
