There was a big Volvo-to-do in Tempe, Arizona, on April 4 with two Pl900s taking center stage! Bob Skoog reported at our last general meeting on April 8 that it was a huge success. The Cactus Chapter of VOCA had organized everything very well, providing awards and prizes, and nobody walked away empty-handed. Excerpts from their newsletter, starting on page 7, give us a flavor of the activities of this (what may become a yearly) event. Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle at our last meeting was won by Jack Johnson, who, unfortunately, was not in attendance to gather up his very opulent winnings of $49.50! Don't you think this is the right time for you to be at the next meeting and try your luck?! Well, it was long in coming, the Bloomin' Desert Tour, - maybe too long. There were still flowers left, more than in previous years, but the mercury hit 35°C (95°F), which made our old time linear water temperature gages have their first real work-out in well nigh six months. Jeff Perry has more details for you on page 9 of the 1998 version of this yearly SDVSA event. The "History of the Sports Car" preview at the San Diego Auto Museum was well attended by 20 of our SDVSA members and guests, as well as many affiliates of the museum and other car clubs. We estimated the throng at between 500 and 600 people, indulging in good food provided by three caterers and wine, beer and soft drinks. Some of the outstanding exotics on display were a Lamborghini Miura, a BMW M-1, two M-B 300SLs among others, and, of |
course, Bud Hartwell's pristine 1972 1800ES! It was a great event, and best of all, free to the auto clubs and patrons of the museum. Way to go, Harry! The club enjoyed an excellent and well attended brunch on Sunday, May 3rd, at Amelio's Bistro in the Four Points Hotel complex on Aero Drive. Harry Stevenson, coordinator of this event would leave no stone unturned to ferret out participants, and it was nice to see so many wives and girl friends attend. Maybe we should make Harry our permanent. "Events Coordinator"! Even if you missed the Auto Museum gala and the SDVSA brunch at Amelo's Bistro, you can redeem yourself in the eyes of the club by participating in our 6TH Annual Menghini Wine Tour on May 17!! Just 'turn the page for all the details of this SDVSA popular annual event. The next general meeting of your SDVSA on June 10 will start at 6:30 p.m., and is going to provide our members with an opportunity to view some of the club's newly acquired videos. We will present the History Channel's "Volvo Story" and/or episodes of the six action packed adventures with "The Saint" (please see page 10) on the big screen TV available in the meeting room! We'll have a short business meeting and put the newsletter together first, and, once we know the number of members and guests in attendance, we'll order pizza for everyone for a contribution of $4 ahead. SDVSA will provide the sodas and suds, as usual. Pretty good, and fun, deal! |
