Our membership coordinator, Kurt Seivert, reported that as of February 10, SDVSA has 58 paid and six honorary members who receive 1800 NEWS. Kurt and our chapter coordinator, Russ Quell, have contacted most of our former members, with mixed results, as one would expect. We'll see if their efforts payoff. Randy Blum, who is also a member of the Austin-Healey club, brought samples of "T"-shirt art, which was produced by another participant of that group. Now all we need to do is decide on a motif for the back of our shirts. At the meeting we thought that a three-quarter view of an 1800 in front of some San Diego landmark would be suitable. If you have any favorite pictures of both items, which an artist can use to create a few samples, bring them to a meeting or event, or get in touch with any of the characters in the box on page 5. Bud Hartwell, a co-founder of SDVSA in 1980, won Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle of $25, but graciously donated the money back to the club treasury. Thank you, Bud, from everyone! Jim Barnes, enthusiastic devotee of the Volvo marque and our SDVSA, has accepted a more challenging job in Arkansas, and is leaving San Diego with Desiree and Colin at the beginning of April. He'll be sorely missed for his effervescent personality and for his willingness to always lend a hand to the club. Whether from organizing events or writing articles about them, to investigating products and taking on additional jobs, -- including our club representative to the San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council --, Jim always stepped up to the task with a smile. All SDVSA members wish you well, Jim! It was a pity that the weather forecasters predicted rain for our February Temecula Wine Tour on Sunday 21. Though the climate wasn't perfect, we managed to enjoy ourselves, tasting and purchasing some excellent wines at four |
wineries, carefully selected by Del Skoog for their ambiance. Even Dave Hunt from Anaheim in his topless P1900 did not let a few rain clouds deter him from becoming part of our little nine car caravan. Randy Blum has composed a synopsis of the adventures of the Volvinos in the Temecula Valley, which appears on page 7. Thank you for a superb job, Del! And to you, too, Randy. Information on the tour of Swedish Speed and Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, March 27 is given on the next two pages. This should be an interesting and fun event, as promised by the flyer. The deadline for RSVP is long past, but we are confident that if you decide to attend in the next couple of days, they'll find room for you. So please make your reservations now! Mark Jankowski is right now hatching the plans for the East County Tour on Sunday, April 25. He is really excited about finding new places to see; -- from a chocolate factory in Boulevard, historical museums along the way, a quaint restaurant in Jacumba, to the Desert View Tower. You don't want to miss this drive! Look for more information in next month's issue. And don't forget the Dr. Volvo Sports Car Event on Sunday, May 2 in Fountain Valley. A brand new flyer for this happening appears on page 4. Important Note: Again we have an opportunity to get our overdrive clutches relined, using real Leycock-de Normanville tooling. Smitty of Smitty's Sunbeam is looking for used clutches to make up a shipment to England. The cost should be around $100, including shipping. Good deal!! Contact Goran Freske, et. al. in the "box" on page 5, or Smitty at (619)233- 7937. |
