June 2000 (20th Anniversary)

Number 6

From the picture above, it looks as if Dave Hunt is in trouble again! Read on.

Our total membership is down from 69 to 64, because we did some "book cleaning" and eliminated a number of members who were over three months behind in dues payments. However, the attendance at our regular general meetings seems to be slowly growing. At the May l0th meeting, we had 14 veterans and one new member attend. That's around 1/3 of the local members, and that's fantastic for any club! Right now, we seem to attract more members to the "Second-Wednesday" monthly meetings than to some of the monthly events! Perhaps we should schedule more of the monthly events on weekday evenings? Please, contact any of the persons in the "box" on page 4 to let us know what you as a club member think about that idea.

Richard Hellman won Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle and he would have been $43 richer if he had been at the meeting. So, the pot keeps growing! Remember that if you plan to attend the general meetings, you should arrive before 8:00 p.m., because of the new locked door policy commenced recently by the auto museum.

As promised in last month's 1800 NEWS, Dave Hunt has provided us with an excellent summary and photos from the first ever Swedish Speed All Volvo Car Show 2000, which took place in Perris on May 7. Dave's coverage starts on page 7, and the reader can glean from that what is happening in the picture at the top of this page. Notice the names on the list of winners on page 8. Congratulations to all the participants, and particularly to the members of the SDVSA!

The 8th Annual Menghini Wine Party and Horseshoe Tournament takes place in Mike Menghini's apple orchard on Saturday, June 24. Our memorable experience of sharing the grounds with the English Ford Cortina Association last year prompted us look for other car clubs to invite, and the Austin-Healey Club elected to join us this year. Most of you know the routine by now, but for the newcomers to our SDVSA, there is more information on the next page. So, make your plans now to join us in this traditional annual happy happening!

There are some changes in our event schedule on page 4. The Live Oak Park Picnic, which was planned for Sunday, July 23, has been cancelled due to unavailability of the grounds throughout the summer. Therefore, we are rescheduling our participation in the Back to the '50s Car Show from September to Thursday, July 13. This is the day after the general meeting on July 12, and therefore most of you will not have July's 1800 NEWS by then. That is why we have all the details on page 3 in this issue. We will have a "'phone tree" about a week before to remind everyone of this change, and make sure that we have enough committed cars.

Now is the time to start making plans for attending the national VSA-VCOA West Coast Convention at the Sheraton Rancho Cordova Hotel in Sacramento, CA., October 20, 21 and 22. More details on the convention can be found on the registration form duplicated on page 6.

Participate. YOU are the club!
