June 1999

Number 6

Scott Harrison reappeared after a long absence at our May 12 regular monthly meeting at the Auto Museum. Allan Miller, who we haven't seen lately, also came. They rounded out the twelve members we had in attendance. Kurt Sievert reported that the membership now stands at 67. If you are a new member and have not received your membership kit, please call Kurt at (619)278-4177 and he'll be happy to send you one. Randy Blum was provided with a big photo of a red '65 1800S for his friend who designed the T-shirts for the MG club, and hopefully, we will soon have some proposals of our new club garment. It will have our SDVSA logo on the front, and a large 1800 in front of a famous San Diego landmark on the back.

Ken Monson won $25 in Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle for the third time! He kindly donated the amount to the club treasury. Thank you, Ken, from all of us!

The 7th Annual Menghini Wine Tasting and Horseshoe Tournament got off to a slow start. Only four cars joined the caravan between COCO's and the winery. Low clouds hung over the mountains around Julian, and it looked as if we were in for a cold an drizzly day. The first three cars from the Cortina Club arrived and staked claim to the south side of the paddock with British flags. Then OUR cars started to arrive by ones and twos -- in conjunction with the SUN! By the time we had the barbie fired up, we counted ten vintage Volvos, one 740 wagon, Russ' Camry, and Don Bair's Lexus. The Cortina club amassed an amazing eight cars and one Jaguar! (See Scott's photo above). It turned out to be a beautiful day and a successful meet, to which the articles on page 10 will testify. The Invitational Horseshoe team of Gene Bellegarde and Goran Freske held the early lead of 10 to 3 in the final match, only to suffer a most humiliating defeat of 21 to 11 at the hands of Russ Orrell and Jeff Perry.

Contrary to the paragraph in the last 1800 NEWS about the Saturday, April 17, Swap Meet at Westside Volvo in Culver City, Greg Blake and our roving reporter Dave Hunt and his P1900 did attend. Dave's report can be found on page 9. Dave has been really busy co-arranging and/or frequenting several car related event, carrying the Volvo banner, so to speak. Read about his exploits at the Muckenthaler Invitational Car Show on May 16 in Fullerton, also on page 9. Dave has also started an all-Volvo club in Orange County, officially known as the Orange County Volvo Club (OCVC). They currently have ten members, and more information is available from Dave Hunt at (714)630-2207. Good luck, Dave!

June is another event-filled month for "I Roll"-ers. The 9th Annual VSA Westside Volvo Classic Car Show is on Saturday, June 12 at 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cash awards and many other surprises will be given out. See the flyer on this event on page 3. If vintage racing is your thing, we have a flyer on the Tustin Thunder and car show on page 5 just for you. There is yet another car related event advertised in this newsletter for the first time on page 4. For all you historians and collectors of automotive trivia, the Annual Literature Fair and Exchange on June 27 might be of interest.

SDVSA's own June event is a visit to the San Diego Auto Museum's relocated Restoration Facility on Saturday 19. Turn the page to find all the details on which Gabor Varadi has spent a good deal of time to make this a successful venture. Don't miss it! And remember the Pizza 'n' Video party next meeting! To prepare you for July's SDVSA event, page 8 shows you the cross-section of your 122/1800 steering box, with all the part numbers and where to get 'em, courtesy of Bob Skoog.
