Number 6

We were glad to see Jim Algert and Jake Quimpo at the SDVSA monthly General Meeting on Wednesday, May 12, -- both are great club supporters who we see too little of. Since there were only nine attendees, we did not conduct a 50/50 raffle. Instead, we got right down to the business of preparing for the VSA West Coast Meet, which, you should all be aware by now, is being held this year in San Diego on the week end of September 10 through 12. Gene Bellegarde, our meet coordinator, was at the meeting, and, between Gene and Jeff Perry, who was a virtual wellspring of ideas; we resolved many issues of registration and publicity. It seems we have a convention registration form in all pertinent publications. Kurt Sievert is doing a fine job of collecting door and raffle prizes, and contacting various Volvo representatives.

For the benefit of new members of the SDVSA who may not know of Irv Gordon, and in celebration of his visit to San Diego for the 2004 VSA National West Coast Meet, on page 6 you will find an article on Mr. Gordon that was originally covered in the July 1996 edition of 1800 NEWS.

At the 39th Annual Fallbrook Vintage Car Show on Sunday, May 30, the Southern California Volvo contingent was represented by Dave Hunt with his ever improving P1900, Nick and Jerry Hall with their immaculate ’64 122 Wagon, Brad Benson with his gorgeous ’72 ES, and Göran Freske with his ’64 1800S trusty daily driver, pushing 400,000 miles. We met Del and Bob Skoog, who came for a short visit, and Darwyn Lumley, member of the SDVSA, and one of the organizers of this outstanding classic car show. We all know that the “Lock Ness of 1800s,” Jeff Perry’s ’66 1800S ”Li’l Red” exists, but it was conspicuous by its absence. However, Jeff was there, snapping pictures of some of the 420 cars (a new record) that graced the grassy infield and dirt track of the Fallbrook High School athletic stadium, from pre-twentieth century ”Old Timers” to early 1970s muscle cars. More and more foreign car are creeping into the show, and, aside from the British cars which have their own two classes, eight (!) Opel GTs, a handful of Porsches, a fly yellow Ferrari Dino 206 -- and of course the four Volvos -- were making their presence felt! Pictures and a more detailed summary of the show appear on pages 7.

The Volvo clubs’ participation in the San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council’s Car Show ”Auto Museum on the Lawn”

on Saturday, June 5, turned out to be two cars – again Dave Hunt with his P1900 and Göran Freske with his ’64 1800S. We had hoped for a few more different model Volvos to represent the SDVSA. Dave’s dedication to the Volvo cause should be obvious to anyone reading his article on this event, provided on page 8. Thanks Dave for your time and effort! His P1900 attracted considerable attention by the onlookers, and received a special invitation to the National City 13th Annual Automobile Heritage Day, which takes place on Sunday, August 1. (Our plans are to have a better showing of Southern California classic Volvos at this show, so, please, consider attending!). There was a lot of interest in the 1800ES, but, unfortunately, none was on display. We had SDVSA newsletters free for the taking, and hopefully recruited a couple more members, including a fellow who is looking to buy an 1800 for a trouble free daily driver!

The first in line of upcoming events is the So. Cal. VSA 14TH Annual Westside Volvo Car Show, which takes place in Culver City on Sunday, June 13, just a few days after you receive this bulletin. All the details of this premier Volvo event are given on page 2.

Our main event in June, however, is the 12th Annual Menghini Winery Picnic and Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, June 19. More details about this traditional SDVSA event can be found on page 3. As the flyer mentions, we have invited the Sumbeam Owners Group of San Diego to join us this year. The Sunbeam cars have a lot of common parts with the 1800 series. Please make your plans to enjoy a day in the beautiful environs of Julian now!!!

NOTE! Instead of our monthly second-Wednesday General Meeting on July 14th, the SDVSA will participate in the ”Back to the ’50s Car Show” in La Mesa the on the following day, Thursday, the 15th. The proprietor of ”All Things Bright and British” has again kindly given us permission to use the parking area in front of the store at 8401 La Mesa Blvd. in La Mesa, CA. The Volvos will start arriving at a little after 5:00 p.m., after the store closes. There are plenty of food sources in the neighborhood, so don’t worry about going home for dinner before you join us. If you enjoy the Fab’ Fifties era cars, you’ll be overwhelmed by the number of high quality vehicles, which appear at these informal gatherings on every Thursday throughout the summer months.
