general meeting on June 14, which was held at Rick Brulés GO!motors, was
attended by 18 members and guests. During the abbreviated business portion, we mainly
discussed the new SDVSA web site, which Jeff Perry - our club photographer and man
for all seasons - is working on. We voted to name it simply sdvsa.org and to
provide the initial fee of $35/year to get it on line. It will be tied in with other Volvo
sites, such as other clubs, magazines, dealers, etc., under the search title
"volvo". After putting the labels and stamps on the newsletter, we settled down
with a piece of UNO pizza in one hand and a beer or soda in the other, to watch
Ricks very entertaining video of our East County Tour, and other car related
footage. This time, we were treated to free pizza which Glenn M. Miller,
owner of the UNO Pizza chain (see page 10), an acquaintance of Ricks, donated
to the SDVSA. Thank you very much, Glenn! Then Rick led us on an informative sortie of the
15 or 16 classic cars that occupied the building. Very impressive! A big thank you
goes to Rick and the staff at GO!motors from the SDVSA for again being our
"host with the most".
The 8th Annual Menghini Wine Party took place in Mike Menghinis apple orchard on Saturday, June 24. We had two Austin-Healeys, one Jaguar XJ6C, one SAAB Sonett III, one Volvo P1900, one 120 wagon, one 1800E, and one 1800ES, gather for breakfast at COCOs in the morning. Due to the amount of traffic, our diverse caravan became separated into two groups that traversed different routes to Dudlys Bakery in Santa Ysabel. After a few anxious moments, the parade was reassembled again, and off we went, winding our way to the winery along Wynola Way. When our contingent arrived at a little past noon, half a dozen Volvos and Austin-Healeys were already in the paddock. Eventually, we had ten cars from the SDVSA, six from the Austin-Healey Club, and two Sonetts from the SAAB Association of Los Angeles, for a total of eighteen vehicles, and 32 people! The weather was well neigh perfect, the grounds were in excellent shape, and, as always, Mike and Toni Menghini |
were perfect hosts. Mike was sporting his blue 1994
SDVSA baseball cap, which we presented to him a few years ago! We promptly got the BBQ
going, and, after a nice lunch and car talk under a large sunshade, Mike gave us a
good-natured tour of their quaint winery. People came and went all afternoon, but most had
left by four oclock. Some of us lingered on until around 6 p.m. the setting
and the afternoon were so beautiful! By the way, we just dodge the bullet it rained
in Julian the very next day!
By the time you read this issue of 1800 NEWS, hopefully everyone was able to enjoy the Back to the 50s Car Show in La Mesa. More about this - our July event - in next months newsletter. On August 26th, we are planning to bring back another SDVSA tradition the North County Wine Tour. This year it will be coordinated by Jeff Perry, who is already working hard on planning a scenic route between three wineries. We think Jeff has a few surprises in store for us. More details in Augusts issue. In contrast, our September 24th event is new to SDVSA. We plan to support Ken Rodenbush and his Volvo 1800, racing at Dodge Anaheim Thunder at Edison Field. For more information, see page 5. If you cant attend the real thing in Anaheim, our local Volvo guru and former coordinator of SDVSA, Gene Bellegarde, is again making "rumbling" noises about inviting the club to participate in HO slot car races. A couple of years ago, we had a great time racing slot cars under Genes direction. You can even order your own scale 1800 (and other Volvo models) slot car from Gene, at no profit to him. The date for this Saturday event has not been set yet, but look for an announcement in future issues of 1800 NEWS. And dont forget to make plans for attending the 2000 VSA/VCOA West Coast National Meet at the Sheraton Rancho Cordova Hotel in Sacramento on Friday through Sunday, October 20 22.
