Ten members, but only three classic Volvos, were present at the monthly meeting on June 9th. Usually, the summer months bring out more people and cars. We learned from Gabor Varadi, our Museum Rep., that, if you are a member of SDAM, you also receive free admittance to the Petersen and Evans Automotive Museums. Kurt Sievert reported that we are now 62 paid-up and seven honorary members strong, and all 75 copies of 1800 NEWS were disposed of by mailing or taken by attendees for handouts. Bud Hartwell informed us that the deal with San Diego Volvo for showing some of our cars in their used car show room is off because of some permanent new construction(?). We also discussed future events, the details of the most imminent being described below. Jim Algert won $14 in Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle, but we haven't seen Jim for awhile, so the pot keeps growing. No competitor from SDVSA residing in San Diego entered the 9th Annual Classic Car Show at Westside Volvo on the l2th of June. However, Bob Workman was there as a spectator, and Dave Hunt and members of his new club, Orange County Volvo Club (OCVC), collected their share of awards, as pointed out by Dave in his Newsletter on page 8. It is going to be even harder to find someone local attending the VCOA convention in Santa Rosa, starting on Friday 23rd of July through Sunday the 25th. That's a lot of driving for San Diego based SDVSA members, even if they are Volvo freaks. If you are so inclined, there is information and an application for you on page 4. Dave Hunt's caravan leaves at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night from Anaheim for a 65 mph run to Santa Rosa (see page 8)! Call Dave at (714)630-2207 if you are interested in joining. Our SDVSA visits to the SDAM Restoration Facility and the Motor Works machine shop on June 19 turned out great! Fourteen of us spent |
about two hours in the morning being informed about the potential exhibits at the museum by Art Bishop, executive director of the SDAM. Jeff Perry has contributed a summary on page 7 of the morning's activities. After a Mexican lunch, where the Volvo talk flew fast and furiously, we were off to a lot more education about rebuilding engines. Motor Works is a first class engine rebuilding facility which makes most other shops seem amateurish by comparison. More about that on page 7. Thank you, Gabor, for coordinating this most informative affair! Are YOU ready to refurbish your 120/1800 steering box? You may still have the time to gather all the pans which were enumerated in June's issue of 1800 NEWS. Pertinent information about this SDVSA Sunday, July 18 event and a map of how to get to Bob Workman's European Auto are presented on the next page. We are probably going to see Bill Webb there, and some more of our friends from the Western States V SA, and from the new OCVC. There is a l0th anniversary buffet at the San Diego Automotive Museum on Friday, July 30 from 6:30 to 8:30 for members and guests. $10 at the door. The main events in August are, of course, the VSA East and West Coast Conventions (see page 5). In deference to those happenings, our local SDVSA August event is not so ambitious. We are settling for the "Back to the '50s Car Show" in La Mesa on Thursday, August 12, the day after our August 11 monthly meeting. Bud Hartwell is once again the coordinator and would like to reserve parking places as soon as possible. So if you haven't reserved a spot, please call Bud at (619)588-2180. But be sure that you show up and on time, because reserved parking is highly sought after. We were embarrassed last year because one member was an hour late and one never showed at all! Look on page 3 for more information on "The '50s Car Show". |
