The jackpot in Bob Skoog’s 50/50 raffle is taking on astronomical proportions! Had Jacob Quimpo, joined the other 11 members at the general meeting in July, he would have come into possession of $43.50! The 240s outnumbered the 1800s at the SDVSA Swap Meet, held on a perfect-weather Sunday at Crown Point on the 22nd of July. The turn out of local Volvo fans was rather disappointing, only representing about half the 17 or so participants. Even so, we attracted two ladies all the way from Hollywood! Gene Bellegarde recounts all the action on page 3. As you can see from the last page, the SDVSA Events Schedule on page 2, and by reading on, August presents ample opportunities to participate in various car - and club -- activities; Our apologies for not promoting our participation in the “Back to the ‘50s Classic Car Show” in last month’s 1800 NEWS. By the time you get this newsletter, it has already happened. However, you should have gotten a ’phone reminder, and everyone who was interested in this fun event should have been there! We’ll see how successful it was in September’s newsletter. Dave Hunt and his Orange County VSA (OCVSA) are putting on a scenic drive to Idyllwild on Sunday, August 12. The group will leave Swedish Speed in Perris, at 9:00 a.m. See page 4 for details & directions. The Volvo 1800 40th Anniversary presentation IS taking place at the Historical Races at the Laguna-Seca track in Monterey, in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours, on the weekend of August 17 - 19. If you bring an 1800, the tickets are free (a $90 value), but you have to pick them up at the Monterey Hyatt Regency hotel, located at 1 Old Golf Course Road (1-800-233-1234). The show, which is going to take place between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, will feature, among other things, a special presentation in honor of Irv Gordon and his ~2 million-mile ’66 1800S, as well as prizes for other 1800 owners. |
On Saturday 18th, the San Diego Auto Museum is holding a garage sale between 8:00 a.m. and noon in the back of the museum building. And, finally, the VSA/VCOA West Coast Meet in Vancouver, BC takes place on the weekend of August 24 - 26. About half a dozen members from the San Diego VSA have reportedly expressed an interest in attending this event. In addition, all Jensen factory built 1800s, (and later 1800 models, too) are invited to the 13th Jensen National Convention at the Bahia Resort Hotel during the week of August 27 - 30. Call Bob Adams (858)487-6371 or Bruce & Leonora Briges (760)942-2305 for details on daily events and registration forms. Remember, the SDVSA also has the month of October reserved at the Auto Museum for displaying two of our cars at a time. They are going to be at the northeast corner of the main exhibit hall. Bud Hartwell has already volunteered his beautiful ’72 ES. We also talked to Ken Munson about displaying his gorgeous, red, P1800, and Alan Miller is not averse to showing his, also red, 544. The cars don’t have to be in show room condition, and the duration of the display of any car can vary on a weekly basis. On Saturday, September 22nd, it is time once again to explore some of the new wineries in North San Diego County. Jeff Perry, our somewhat reluctant tour leader, is planning an exciting route to take us to two wineries, which our club has never visited. More information will be available in next month’s 1800 NEWS. Don’t miss out on this excellent event! On Wednesday, September 12, we’ll have another Pizza ’n’ Videos night at the regularly scheduled General Meeting! We usually meet at 6:30 p.m. to dispense with the business meeting before indulging in the goodies. So, if you never been to our meetings, this is a good time to join us! YOU are the CLUB! |
