August 2000 (20th Anniversary)

Number 8

Don Bair was the winner of $47 in Bob Skoog’s 50/50 raffle at the July 12 general meeting, and he was present to collect the money! He was just up for renewal of his membership fee, so it was perfect timing. Don beat tremendous odds with 71 paid-up member’s names in the hat. However, we only had a rather disappointing 8 members, and one new inductee, in attendance. If you want to examine the progress that Jeff Perry is making on our SDVSA club web site, call up http://24.9.250.195 on the internet. Bud Hartwell managed to amass 7 classic Volvos of various models for the Back to the ‘50s Car Show in La Mesa on 13 July - the night after our general meeting. Some of our regulars had their cars laid up for various reasons, which accounted for fewer cars than last year. But the owners of most of those missing Volvos were nevertheless part of our enthusiastic group, which numbered 15 individuals. We had Gene’s rare - ‘a might rough around the edges’ - 1958 445 "Duett", Randy’s amazing 1963 120 Amazon wagon, Bud’s pristine ’72 ES, Jim Algert’s excellent ’73 ES, and Russ’s newly detailed ’72 1800E. Surprise loyalists were Alan Miller, with his spiffy red ’64 544, and Dave Hunt in his intrepid P1900 of 1956 vintage, all the way from Anaheim! A potential new member with a ’67 122 also joined the group. We handed out half a dozen SDVSA windshield cards to people with classic Volvos, or parts, for sale, and/or with an interest in joining the club. The other cars in the show were mostly gorgeously restored Detroit iron (and fiberglass) of 1920s though 1975 vintage. We saw the return of the behemoth ’48 DeSoto Suburban ‘surfmobile’ with wood floor paneling, wood and metal roof rack, outside sun-visor (gangster cap), and a bust of the Spanish explorer on the hood! A few foreign cars, besides our lot, showed up, including the perfect Bugeyed Sprite, which was at our Menghini wine fest last month. From the sublime - a Ferrari GTO (later V8 version), to the ridiculous - a Jensen-Healey mounted on a four- wheel drive truck chassis, the show had something to please everyone. And there were plenty of food and drink available. We would like to thank Bud Harwell again for his considerable efforts in bringing this event together, all

of the participants,  and, of course, Bernadette, owner of "All Things Bright and British", for allowing the SDVSA to use the parking area in front of her tea shop.

In the same vein, the SDVSA received a request from Fred Puhn at South County Volvo (formerly Wescott Volvo) in National City, to participate in the 9th Annual National City Automobile Heritage Day on Sunday, August 6. Since it was too late for any announcement in 1800 NEWS, Bud Hartwell was again called upon to assemble a few of our classic Volvos to take part in the parade and show at Kimball Park. In spite of his efforts, Bud turned out to be the only member of our club who was showing a Volvo – his ’72 ES. Royce Dunn, also a member of the SDVSA, was there with his beautiful 1931 Graham, which took first price in its class. Good job, Royce! However, we are rather disappointed to learn that there was no sign at the show of any representative from South County Volvo, or of their promised new Volvos. Again, we want to thank Bud for his gallant efforts.

On August 26th, we are planning to bring back another SDVSA tradition – the North County Wine Tour. This year we will visit three wineries, two of them brand new. The details of coordinator Jeff Perry’s machinations are presented on the next page.

Our September 24th event is new to SDVSA. We plan to be there to support Ken Rodenbush and his Volvo 1800, racing in the Dodge Anaheim Thunder at Edison International Field. For some personal information on Ken and his racing career, see page 4. Additional information on the Anaheim Thunder races is presented on page 5. Dave Hunt will have more information on our participation in this event in September’s issue of 1800 NEWS.

The promised SDVSA Slot Car Races will take place on Saturday, September 30, under the expert direction of Gene Bellegarde. More details about this fun event on page 6. Plan to be there! Again…
