We had 12 attendees, - and enough pizza for 16 - at our Pizza 'n' Video General Meeting on March 8. Art Banks and Dave Hunt made the long trip all the way from Los Angeles in Art's beautiful red ES, delivering three videos from Greg Blake. These videos, acquired by Greg straight from Sweden, showed two extremes of Volvo ownership. The first was filmed in Israel, in a documentary style, showing the durability of the 140, 160, and 240 series - and of their owners! The second was more familiar to our experience. It was called "3 Days in Gothenburg", and it documented the 1998, or 12th edition, of the VROM (as in Volvo Rendezvous of Owners and Members) convention. Greg attended the 1999 version of this, the greatest assemblage of Volvos the world has ever seen (see Greg's article in September, 1999, issue of 1800 NEWS, and also the March-April 2000 issue of S-E-ES)! Greg was also interviewed on Swedish T.V., Channel 4 in Goteborg (third video), where he made this profound statement; "There is something very
special about people who own Volvos, and the people who own Volvos know
that. " Aviv Peres, the producer of the first two videos, sent Greg a copy of an article, which appeared in Goteborgs-Posten on Monday 23, 1999, explaining how and why the VROM video was made. A translated version of that article can be found on page 7. The reader can see that we had a rather interesting and lengthy meeting, and, allowing more time for stuffing ourselves with pizza and our senses with beer and videos, we elected to forego Bob Skoog's 50/50 raffle. So remember, there is still $35 for some lucky General Meeting attendee to win! Mark Yarborough of Swedish Speed is a great and attentive host, as we rediscovered on March 19. Around 23 people (only three cars from San Diego) came to listen to the master of 1800 restoration, Art Banks, |
explain the finer points concourse competition. He, and Dave Hunt, gave valuable information on the similarities and differences in judging our cars by the VSA and VCOA. Then we were shown how to properly clean and wax our cars, and some the best products to aid us in this task. After a BBQ lunch and pleasant small ta1k, some of us took the short drive to the March Airforce Base Museum. There we saw interesting displays of the history of air warfare from WWI, all the way up to the Gulf War, shown mostly by models, dioramas, souvenirs and keepsakes. Outside, there were some WWII aircraft on display, but mostly later, jet powered, aircraft, -- from the first U.S. jet fighter, the P-59 Bell Aerocomet (1944) to the latest F-14 Tomcat, -- plus a whole range of transports. If you missed this event, you have another chance to participate on Sunday, May 7 (see page 3), when Mark Yarborough and Swedish Speed host a Volvo Car Show and Swap Meet. (This is the SDVSA event for Mav). Mark is an assiduous supporter of the Southern California Volvo clubs, and of classic Volvo cars - so let's support him and Swedish Speed in May! Call 1-800-993-3395 for further info on this event. Eight So. Calif. cars attended the Cactus Chapter of VCOA's All Volvo Day on April 1 in Tempe, AZ. All returned safely, despite a few mechanical mishaps. Luckily, Bob Workman was along to fix all problems. A bit more about this Arizona adventure on page 5. The San Diego Auto Museum Car Club Council is holding a Car Show on Saturday, May 6. Details on page 4. We'd like to see a few SDVSA cars there! Mark Jankowski's East County Tour on April 29, promises to be even more fun this year. Look for more information on this event on the next page. If you really enjoy driving your vintage Volvo, and associating with likeminded people, come and join us in this exciting experience! |
